What a woman needs after her divorce is a girlfriend getaway. Mine happened to include powdery beignets, fine Champagne, and a few thousand men (and women) in red dresses.
Only in New Orleans.
Which is, of course, pronounced “N’awlins” by those in the know, especially those who make the French Quarter — where we stayed and where we played — the one-of-a-kind place that it is. The kind of place that was the perfect destination for my girlfriend getaway two weeks after my divorce.
In N’awlins, I met up with my college buddy Stephanie Oswald, editor-in-chief of Travelgirl magazine, and a dozen other fabulous bloggers and travel writers from around the country who quickly became my shopping/dining/drinking/touring/swimming buddies, all courtesy of the New Orleans Hotel Collection (#NOLACollection …#ThankYou!)
I roomed with the talented Rita Cheng of Yippy Momma in the beautiful and historic Audubon Cottages, a collection of nine private cottages tucked away in the French Quarter that surround what may be the oldest saltwater pool in the area. This was our cottage, right there by the pool.
We had the chance to witness the annual Red Dress Run to benefit local charities. It is what it sounds like: a race where women and men wear red dresses. In New Orleans, it’s also an excuse for people to wear red dresses, wigs and tutus and wander around the French Quarter.
We ate and drank at all kinds of wonderful French Quarter restaurants.
And of course, there were some delicious drinks along the way. Gray Line Tours New Orleans treated us to a cocktail tour that kicked off at the stunning Roosevelt Hotel, where we sampled Sazeracs, a whiskey and bitters cocktail that hit the spot on a hot August day.
We took in the sights and the scene of the French Quarter, a place like no other:
New Orleans is the perfect place for the girlfriend getaway (with or without the divorce), with old friends and new.
The NOLA Collection girlfriend getaway was what I needed, when I needed it, where I needed it to be. Thanks y’all!
