This morning at our high school, some kid pulled the fire alarm. Stupid, yes, especially in light of Friday’s devastating events in Newtown, Connecticut, which isn’t far from here. But it’s not nearly as stupid as this:
A 17-year-old high school student in Sweden reportedly took to Instagram to request photos of girls in Gothenburg who are “sluts,” and then shared photos of underage girls.
More than 200 photos were submitted, along with names and alleged sexual activities of girls aged 13 to 14, according to the Aftonbladet, a Swedish tabloid newspaper.
Oh, and that teen who asked for the photos was a girl.
Soon, a call to beat up the girl believed to have made the “slut request,” and protesters descended on her high school. People showed up to defend the school, while protesters kicked down lampposts and jumped on cars, reports Aftonbladet. The alleged perp has reportedly been arrested, and the riot ended at the mall.
Gawker added insult to injury by acting like 16-year-old boys watching “Porky’s,”reporting that “Sweden is full of rioting sluts.”
Idiotic commenters joined in, of course, apparently not bothered by the fact that these are 13 and 14 year-old girls we’re talking about. But a few provided the voice of reason, reminding readers that “This was intentional debasement ….meant to dehumanize and sexually exploit non-consenting MINOR girls.”
I’d just moments earlier cancelled my Instagram account because they announced a plan to sell our photos to advertisers, even if you’re a minor.
All I know is, parenting in the digital age sure isn’t easy, but being a teenager has never been socially more difficult.
