Sadly this isn’t the first headline about kid-dropping, baseball fanatic dads. It happened earlier this year right here in the States.
But this latest “Father Drops Child for Foul Ball” video ends with a classic evil eye moment from his wife. You don’t have to be able to read lips in Taiwanese to understand that this guy will be spending the rest of his weekend at Chateau Bow-wow, no matter how many times he gestures that the ball was heading for his daughter and he was, naturally, protecting her by releasing her from his grasp and reaching for the ball.
What bothers me most is how amusing the announcers seem to find watching the poor kid falling, headfirst, into the empty seat in front of them. Perhaps they are simply laughing at what an idiot Mr. Fumble-for-a-Foul Ball looks like. Yeah, that must be it, because surely they aren’t laughing at the child, who will go through life with a piece deep down inside knowing that Daddy apparently prefers baseball over her safety and would, therefore, rather drop her on her head than miss the chance to catch a foul ball at a sparsely attended baseball game.
Take a look at Taiwan’s Father of the Year:
No doubt this “Father Drops Child for Foul Ball” moment won’t be the last. At the end of the year, we’ll get to see a montage of such videos on ESPN or your local TV news 11 o’clock broadcast, set to the Benny Hill theme song and capped by shots of little kids sleeping through playoff games and extra-large gentlemen with elaborate face paint on their naked bellies.
And the little girl will continue to wonder what’s so damn funny.
What do you think? Is “Dad Drops Kid for Foul Ball” hi-larious?
